Insect hotels?

Trinity has beautiful wildflower meadows on campus for insects to feed on but not much deadwood or something similar for them to nest in. So we’d like to provide them with more habitat options for this. However, we’ve learned that most pre-fab insect hotels are more decorative to the people putting them up than useful and appropriate for the insects that we would like to put them up for. What is more, insect hotels require annual maintenance.

So we’re currently considering options that are fit for our purpose without creating too much work for someone else who’ll need to look after the insect hotels at some point when/in case we move on from the university. We’re waiting to hear back from the the people who are looking after Trinity Campus and are keen on finding suitable long-term solutions.

Some small insect hotels have been installed during previous years thanks to Ireland’s Pollinator Plan so it looks like a win-win situation if we start by renewing and maintaining those!
