Plalgae
Short description
We provide the most sustainable single-use plastic alternative made from seaweed. Plalgae is carbon negative, soluble, and results in zero waste.
Long description
Plalgae is a seaweed plastic alternative to single-use plastics. By using Seaweed,Plagae will have a carbon-negative footprint. Our process leaves zero waste as all dried seaweed by-products are highly sought after in the agricultural and pharmaceutical industry. Unlike other bioplastics which need to be heated to high temperatures to decompose, Plalgae can biodegrade in the open air. On top of that it is moldable, can be made soluble, and is actually edible. Plalgae is the material the world has been waiting for. We spent months working to build our Plalgae prototype. Using our engineering knowledge, we developed a unique process to convert seaweed into the most sustainable bioplastic. We are currently working on making our full MVP, which will be carbon-negative, biodegradable bags and cutlery.
Scope of the project
We want to implement our solution throughout campus and especially reduce harmful polluting plastic waste at society events and the Trinity ball. We feel it would also be of very beneficial use to Trinity's catering places, which produce a large amount of plastic waste.
Budget
We will need 20 000 euros for executing the first part of the project, including the final manufactural formula and initial patent submission. However, we already got 10 000 euros from Trinity Lauchbox Accelerator and are working on securing additional funding from Enterprise Ireland and other research grants.
How do you envisage dealing with COVID-19 restrictions?
We are working on securing a lab space and testing during the Summer while we develop the business side of the project on TCD LaunchBox. We are currently in talks with AMBER, Trinity Advanced Materials, and BioEngineering Research Department. As it is a Science Foundation Ireland-funded center that provides a partnership between leading researchers in materials science and industry, we are sure that their support will help us develop this project. As business owners and researchers, we are considered essential workers which will allow us to advance our idea for the upcoming summer.
